Bosun Bulker Jobs: Leading the Deck Crew on a Bulk Carrier

The bosun is the senior rating on a bulk carrier deck. The role sits between the officers and the ABs in the practical management of day-to-day deck operations. It is earned, not assigned.

**What the Bosun Does**

Organises and leads the AB and OS crew through the daily maintenance programme. Assigns tasks, checks quality, reports progress to the chief officer.

Leads the mooring stations. Usually the bosun commands the bow team at arrival and departure. The chief officer takes the bridge end. Clear communication between them is what makes a mooring operation smooth.

Hatch cover management is a specific bosun responsibility on bulk carriers. The covers open and close for each port. They seal against weather at sea. The hydraulics, seals and drainage require maintenance that the bosun plans and monitors.

Hold preparation between cargoes. Different commodities require different hold conditions. A grain cargo requires a different preparation standard than coal. The bosun organises the cleaning and readiness work.

**The Difference From AB**

ABs execute tasks. The bosun decides what gets done, in what order, with which crew members, to what standard. The supervisory element is real and it requires different skills than the physical work of an AB.

Not every good AB makes a good bosun. The organisational capacity and the ability to manage a small team in a closed environment under physical and time pressure are the things that separate them.

**Pay**

$2,000 to $3,200 per month on standard bulk carrier agreements. Better operators with larger modern vessels pay toward the upper end. Some operators run crew bonus systems linked to PSC performance that can add to the base.

**Getting There**

Four to eight years of AB sea service on relevant vessel types. Strong discharge book. Positive references that specifically mention supervisory capacity and reliability. The first bosun contract comes from an operator who already knows your work.
